Phone Scam

We continue to get reports from our citizens that they are receiving threatening phone calls from people claiming to the the IRS. The IRS has issued several warnings about this and caution taxpayers to not fall for these obvious scam calls. If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately. DO NOT give these callers any of your personal information. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do:

  1. Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.
  2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
  3. Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
  4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
  5. Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

Greenville Street Bridge Closure

The bridge on Greenville Street between Barnard Avenue and Ragland Street is closed for repairs. We do not have information on how long this closure will last but it will probably be an extended period of time due to the nature of the repairs needed.
